Poetry & 3 Writing Tips From Island Christian Church

By David Kellan

Amongst the many styles of writing which exist, one can argue that poetry is the most expressive. It's one of the best ways to convey what you're feeling, at any given moment, and the fact that there are varied styles to consider cannot be overlooked. With that said, though, not everyone will be able to write the most effective Christian poems, which is where a bit of help may be required. With the assistance of Island Christian Church, here are 3 writing tips to note.

The first step to becoming a better Christian poet is to read and review the works of others. While I'm sure that reading may already be an interest of yours, it's important to look at the works of your favorite poets, drawing your attention to terms they frequently utilize as well. Your favorites may include the likes of A. E. Housman, Walt Whitman and Robert Frost, each one with different works under their belt. When you take note of the terms they most frequently use, your mental thesaurus will expand.

Like any poem, though, Christian poetry writers should be aware of the most common literary terms. There's simile, which is the utilization of comparisons with the words "like" or "as." What about hyperbole, which is an exaggeration that is carried out for the sake of emphasis? These are just a few poetry terms which Christian writers should be aware of. When they are utilized, the creation of better poems will be that much likelier.

Lastly, you should never be afraid to go outside of your comfort zone. Poetry is broad, especially with the values of Island Christian Church set in place, and the fact that various styles can be incorporated shouldn't be overlooked. I believe that it's important to note how poems can refer to Bible stories, or even specific events in the Bible itself. The best way to become a better Christian poet, as you'll come to know, is to explore your literary surroundings.

While it may not appeal to everyone, as a writing style, there's a level of creativity that cannot be denied with poetry. Regardless of the style you are more drawn to, it's easy to see where Christian values and beliefs can be intertwined. However, not everyone will be a strong poet, meaning that a bit of help is always welcome. Make sure that you follow the steps mentioned earlier, keeping them in mind for the long term, and your writing ability will become stronger.
